Children's day out to Mysore

On 2nd January 2013, children made a trip to Mysore. We started our journey at 7 am. We first visited the Mysore zoo. Children were excited at seeing different animals and birds. Following the visit to the zoo we visited the St. Philomina’s Church, where we had the lunch. We then visited the Mysore palace and spent a lot of time on in the garden. In the evening we visited the Brindavan Gardens and enjoyed the musical fountain.

It was an exhilarating and educational trip for the children. The children enjoyed the beauty and historic importance of Mysore. They learned a lot of things through this trip.

Pongal celebration in Sneha care Home

The harvest festival of Pongal is celebrated in different parts of the country but variations mark the way in which it is celebrated. In Karnataka the Festival of Pongal is celebrated with a lot of revelry. It is also known as Sankranti.  During this feast friends and relatives visit one another to exchange greetings.

A special dish is prepared on the occasion of Pongal in Karnataka. The ingredients of this sweet dish known as Ellu are coconut, sesame seeds and sugar. It is customary for the people to exchange this sweet dish with friends, relatives and neighbours. It is a token to show that hence forth the relationship will be as sweet as Ellu with no bitterness involved.

On 14th January 2013 our children also celebrated pongal with great enthusiasm and traditional festivities .They got up in the morning and had bath before the sunrise. The children started the celebration by making a beautiful Rangoli. Radhamma teacher spoke about the myth behind the celebration, the religious and social implications the feast has in the society and on the lives of people and how it should be celebrated.  Mr.Lukas and Ms. Teena two of our foreign volunteers lighted the oven for preparing the pongal rice. Ellu bella and pongal rice was distributed to the children. The celebrations continued with dances, songs and fun throughout the day.
