History

Sneha Charitable Trust started  Sneha Care Home & Shining Star School as a residential facility and School for children living with HIV on July 14 2008 with 20 children. It was started with the aim of developing a model programme which would comprehensively address the multi-faceted issues of children living with HIV. Most of these children were those who were left behind in Snehadaan after the death of their parent/s. Initially it was run with the support of a few staff and many volunteers. The initial development of the programme was supported by USAID supported SAMASTHA project. This year we focussed on taking care of their health and helping the children deal with the psychological and emotional issues along with laying an academic foundation.

In the second year (2009-2010), the present building of Sneha Care Home was constructed and the children moved to the new building. Moreover, this year, another 40 children joined the centre, total number of children reaching 60. This year we developed our educational system modelling on National Institute of Open schooling. We also introduced activity-  based education for children. We began the sports programme with the support of Bangalore School Sports Foundation and also started the annual arts and sports events titled ‘Champion in Me’ including all the care centres in Karnataka. This year we also started the Rainbow summer camp including children from other care centres as well. Through the help of Mr. Paul Darbyshire one of the volunteers we were able to bring in lot of managerial systems in to the programme and later Mr. Paul started the Shining Star Trust in UK to raise funds for us.

In the third year (2010-11) we received another 25 children and the total number of children reached 85. This year we began the process of registering with the Department of women and child welfare and conceptualized the adolescent phase of the programme. We developed the family linkage programme and we were able to send most of the children for holidays. During the summer holidays the staff visited their families and established a good rapport with the family members. In order to assess the impact of the programme we began researches with the help of St. John’s medical college and other independent researchers. We also developed the Process documentation as part of the learning site initiatives.

In the fourth year (2011-12) the number of children reached 100. We got registered under JJ ACT as a Child Care Institution. We started the Champion in Me 5 K run this year. We also started the process of HIV disclosure and our methodology was studied by the Boston University as an innovative approach to disclosure among HIV children.  We also started to assess the future behaviour pattern of children using the Strength and difficult questionnaire.

In the fifth year (2012-2013) 10 children from the former years left the place as the family felt that they could take care of them then. However, we got 10 new children and maintained the number of 100 children. The fifth year saw a lot of development programmatically. We developed a systematic curriculum for each level. We developed the sibling care programme and officially launched the process documentation. We also started to develop the sports module for children. Our networks with coporates and other institution began to flourish. We became a learning site under KSAPS. NACO invited us for a poster presentation in the NACP III Conference. We also carried out researches to understand the programme implications for the children. One of the studies we carried out to understand the nutritional impact was presented in a conference in Mumbai.

This year (2013-14) we have 93 children in the age group of 5 to 13. There are 56 boys and 37 girls.
